I have found bio-ConneKt® Wound Matrix to be an outstanding treatment choice for difficult to heal wounds as it usually only requires a single application to promote wound closure. However, for optimal outcomes, the following must be given consideration:

• Optimal debridement to create a clean wound environment
• Selecting wounds with low exudate levels
• Adequate blood flow
• Absence of conditions which delay healing, e.g. poor nutrition
• Ability to decrease repetitive trauma to the wound site.

A thorough evaluation and appropriate selection of candidates, will ensure optimal results.

This patient was recommended a below knee amputation in light of his wound and vascular status. With aggressive excisional debridement and wound care with immediate application of a collagen dressing, we were able to save the limb. This patient risked foot amputation secondary to his non-compliance in management of his diabetes. Employing aggressive surgical procedures, IV antibiotics and use of wound VAC in conjunction with ECM grafts resulted in the excellent outcome: saving his foot from amputation.
